I know you like balloons sooo much!. Maybe it's because cartoonists can do what they want; they arent told what to do by an editor who wants all of an issue's cartoons to be on a specific topic. Do you think it would change your reading of the bookand your perception of these charactersif they were fictional? I cried and cried. a fire hydrant. Youd drop the pasta in, and it would take ten minutes for the water to start to boil again, she confides cheerily. We got married in 1984. She has vintage Steig, early Helen Hokinson, and, of course, all of Charles Addams. And I was looking through for my size, and this woman came up and yelled at me. Did you find the portrayal of Chasts parents sympathetic? In one scene from the comedy series, Chast, in character, confesses to her fictional son that her long-standing claim about having had a platinum record back in the sixties was a lie. We kept adding to this made-up story. Chast, who has been a staff cartoonist for The New Yorker for the past 25 years, showcased a 45 minute illustrated presentation entitled, "Theories of Everything," based on her most recent book publication of the same name. Why isn't he laughing? She read the note and said, You can go in and see him. It was a really scary feeling, like I wish I were not here. As people got to know my cartoons, they knew they weren't going to get straight illustrations; they were going to get something sort of funny. I thought I might be dreaming. CHAST: My parents lived in Brooklyn, its where I grew up, and where else was I going to go? I love the end-of-the-world sign guys and tombstone gags. More than half of my friends are gay, yet I didnt necessarily want anyone to see me picking up this magazine. Despite the improbable musical meanstwinned ukuleles and far from professional voices, attempting the illusion of harmony by singing in simple unison but slightly off-register, like a badly printed mimeograph from an ancient elementary schoolthe duo has played sold-out engagements in such unlikely high-rent venues as Guild Hall, in East Hampton, and Caf Carlyle, in New York. I dont think its a common phobia. CHAST: I have an odd little book Helen Hokinson did about going out to buy a mop. What might Chast have discovered about herself in writing this book? I love Richfield. In intimate exchanges, Chast reveals herself as more tough-minded and self-confident than her deliberately dithery social surface suggests. In New York they had a thing called the SP program where you could either take an enriched junior high school program for three years or you could do the three years of junior high seventh, eighth, and ninth grades in two years. CHAST: In April of 78 I was still living at home with my parents, which was not good. Ill give you an example of how "school" it was: My parents liked to give me tests when I was in grade school. (New York Times) She likes supermarket cans that advertise unusual contents, like squid, which she collects and displays on a shelf in her writing/drawing studio in her Connecticut home. Her single- and multiple-panel cartoons, along with her lists, typologies, and archaeologies, combined urban and suburban sensibilities, with one point of view subtly undermining the other. That I like. My poster was just a bunch of people standing on a street with "honor America" written above them. I know they suck. The artist discusses her inner Jewish mother and why she doesnt like warm seawater. Its been interesting. Another big problem, more than I recognized at the time, was that I dont think cartooning was particularly appreciated when I was there. But I tend to push the nib. Recalling an outing with Dad, the most anxious person Ive ever known. Does he find that funny? Inoperable. She also publishes cartoons in Scientific American and the Harvard Business Review. One realizes that what this collection illustrates is, to use a phrase she would hate, Chasts historical role: to reconcile the sophisticated, specific-minded humor of The New Yorker with the gawky, confessional truth-telling and boundary-crossing of graphic forms.
